Summary

3D Imposter is part of the Hierarchical Level Of Details Generation feature. It allows you to dynamically create simplified representation of 3D meshes for distant objects.

Intended Outcome/Use Case

3D Imposter allows you to create a very performant 3D representation of a mesh that can be used with the Level of Details (LOD) feature. LOD is a technique that allows Unity to reduce the complexity of a mesh based on its distance from the Camera. Please see documentation for more details.

Very distant objects do not need to have detailed 3D meshes. The 3D Imposter feature will allow you to dynamically replace complex meshes with realistic sprites. You will improve your scene performances while having a smooth LOD transition.
