How Lufthansa Cargo is training aircraft loading supervisors in VR with Unity

Oct 29, 2026|2 Min

To train an aircraft loading supervisor on a live flight, you need a plane, an instructor, and a trainee all in the same place at the same time. Sarah Viaud, Head of Production at NMY, and Adriana Meier, Specialist Steering & Support Freighter Operations at Lufthansa Cargo, show how virtual reality (VR) built in Unity takes that dependency away.

Discover how NMY and Lufthansa Cargo are creating RampVR, a VR training application that lets trainees prepare for live flights without grounding an aircraft or waiting for a simulator.

Watch the full video to learn how:

  • The aircraft loading supervisor, who approves every step of a plane’s ground handling, ends up with the longest and most complex training due to live flights, expensive simulators, and trainees waiting for their turn.
  • The RampVR application guides trainees through two modules: a walk-through of a freighter aircraft and an onload check. In it, trainees find randomly generated mistakes on cargo containers and pallets (unit load devices, or ULDs), get immediate feedback, and take an instructor-led exam.
  • NMY and Lufthansa Cargo build the training together, with NMY scanning the airport and observing supervisors at work, and Lufthansa Cargo testing builds regularly.
  • NMY System Operator, a tool built in Unity, lets a trainer remotely run several VR trainings at once, speak to trainees by voice, and configure exams.
  • VR training is paying off. Lufthansa Aviation Training reports a 75% reduction in training costs. Lufthansa Cargo estimates up to 50% fewer operational faults. In NMY’s surveys, 99% of trainees say immersion helps them understand and learn better, and 97% feel more confident applying their knowledge.
  • The journey continues, with AI-enhanced non-player characters (NPCs) and dynamic scenarios, and haptic feedback (the sense of touch) without controllers.
